‘Blessing in disguise’ – Some Sunderland fans react to key moment v Bristol Rovers

Sunderland opened their campaign with a 1-1 draw at the Stadium of Light against Bristol Rovers, a drastic come down from the excitement of midweek.

The Black Cats registered a fine 8-1 victory against Aston Villa’s Under 21 side in the week, with goals shared amongst the squad. that fed into a narrative of hope and potential for the new league campaign, but it took a goal from an old head to earn them a point against Bristol Rovers.

Their League One campaign got off to a horrible start as The Gas took a third-minute lead. Jayden Mitchell-Lawson drew a foul from keeper Lee Burge, with Luke Leahy bagging from the spot for the visitors.

The Black Cats dominated play from there on in, registering 25 efforts at goal and having 72% of possession. They couldn’t turn that into goals though, even with Aiden O’Brien, Will Grigg, Danny Graham and Charlie Wyke all playing some part in the game. Instead, Chris Maguire drew them level with a little under ten minutes left.

Still Sunderland pressed and they looked likely to go on and win the game, but the late dismissal of George Dobson ended that hopes. He was sent off six minutes into injury time, meaning he’ll miss the next two games for Phil Parkinson’s side.

Despite the promising signs in the performance, Sunderland fans have been quick to comment on Dobson’s dismissal, with the former Walsall man drawing some derision for his performance against the Gas.
