Doncaster Rovers have today signed Ed Williams, previously of Kidderminster Harriers on a two-year deal.

Rovers have struggled to assert themselves in the transfer market this summer, with just three new arrivals; Jason Lokilo from Crystal Palace, Josef Bursik on loan from Stoke and Taylor Richards on loan from Brighton. Williams now gives their squad a more rounded feel.

25-year-old Williams has been on trial with Darren Moore’s outfit following his release by Kidderminster, having scored  15 goals in 50 appearances over two seasons at Aggborough. He came through the youth system of Cheltenham Town, signing a professional deal but failing to make a senior outing.

He later joined Gloucester City, before moving to Kidderminster in July 2018. He opted to leave them in the summer to pursue his dream of playing league football. The midfielder revealed that his trial was a lot of pressure, but that he was now eager to get going.

“I was driven from the start to do well and I’ve got to impress,” he told the club’s official site.

“It’s a lot of pressure to do well and earn a contract but I’m confident in my own ability and I’m pleased it’s paid off. I’m determined to prove myself. It’s been a long few years in non-league but I’ve learned a lot from it and I feel like I’m ready to make the step.”

Doncaster finished ninth in the League One table last season, six points away from the play-off spots, having reached the top six the year before under Grant McCann. Fans will be hoping to see an improvement on last year’s finish, and they’ve already spotted something they like about this deal; the length.

Here’s some of their responses from social media.
