Theo Archibald has left Macclesfield Town by mutual consent, as revealed on their official club site.
The left-winger has been linked with a possible move to League One side Lincoln City, and is now free to pursue a move despite impressing for the Silkmen in League Two this season.
The 22-year-old began his career at Celtic, spending time on loan at Albion Rovers, before a move south of the border. He joined Championship side Brentford but, after a couple of outings, spent time on loan at Forest Green Rovers, scoring once in 14 league appearances.
Archibald has represented Scotland up to under-21 level and made 33 appearances for the Silkmen, scoring six goals. Their statement suggested the winger had asked to leave the club, saying:
“Macclesfield Town can confirm that Theo Archibald has left the club with immediate effect. After Theo advised the Club of his intention to leave the Moss Rose, procedures to cancel his contract were duly followed.
“We have subsequently been advised that this process has now been completed and ratified by all the relevant bodies. We would like to thank Theo for all his efforts during his time with us and wish him every success in his future career.”
The move is not a popular one with their supporters, who have taken to Twitter to vent their frustration.
