‘Two absolutely trash football teams’ – Plenty of fans react to Scunthorpe and Grimsby derby encounter

Grimsby Town were victorious in a fiery derby at Scunthorpe United yesterday, coming out with a 2-0 victory.

Whilst county rivals Lincoln City are currently the top team in Lincolnshire, the two sides separated by Lincolnshire’s only stretch of Motorway battled for bragging rights in the basement division. Ian Holloway’s men came out on top in front of 6,855 fans at Glanford Park.

It’s not all that long ago that the Iron were in the Championship and The Mariners were a non-league side, but they came together as equals in the midday kick-off. It seemed for the opening 45 minutes neither side had their Weetabix, with plenty of endeavour but little quality in front of goal.

After the break it was Holloway’s side who took control, Charles Vernam was one of two players left completely unmarked at the far post to head home on 51 minutes.

Just after the hour mark Luke Waterfall made it two. Waterfall, who has appeared for Scunthorpe as well as Lincoln City, powered his way through the Iron defence to double the visitor’s advantage with a firm header.

The hosts finished the afternoon with ten men, Levi Sutton was sent off for a late lunge on Elliott Whitehouse only minutes after coming on as a sub. It capped a miserable afternoon for the Iron, who just two years ago were hunting a place in the Championship, but who have suffered a spectacular collapse after sacking manager Graham Alexander.

Their fans are certainly not happy at their recent demise, as they express on social media after the game.

  1. absolute rubbish, can Mr Swann convince me to buy a season ticket next season after 2 seasons of this that they call football, no goalkeeper, 2 slowest centre halves in the league, no centre forward, and no manager, tactics are awful what team does not leave at least 1 player up front when defending a corner, where do we go from here, I think the ground will be empty for the next four games of the season.
