‘No automatic promotion’, ‘Embarrassing’ – Many Sunderland fans react to Coventry City defeat

Sunderland’s recent improvement in form has been dealt a minor setback in the last week after losing 1-0 against promotion rivals Coventry City on Sunday afternoon.

The defeat at Coventry’s temporary home, St Andrews, means Phil Parkinson’s men have only taken one point out of a possibly six against promotion rivals Fleetwood Town and Coventry City in the last week.

Matty Godden’s second minute goal was enough to seal the points for the new league leaders who managed to withstand a late Sunderland onslaught to hold onto a valuable three points. Sunderland threw all they had at the Coventry goal, but only managed two shots on target in the match, something which the Sunderland fans, and Phil Parkinson, will be desperately disappointed with.

The game did have a major talking point though, in the 76th minute Max Power thought he equalised for The Black Cats, only for his celebrations to be cut short with his goal correctly ruled out through offside.

The defeat leaves Sunderland sitting fifth in the standings, four points behind Rotherham who occupy the second automatic promotion place and Phil Parkinson will need to rally his troops if they want to avoid the lottery of the play-offs.
