Anyone who grew up watching football in the 1980s will probably remember watching many a big cup night at Oxford United’s old Manor Ground on Sportsnight.
Those glory days of cup shocks were brought to mind last night after Karl Robinson’s men pushed Premier League Newcastle United all the way in their fourth-round FA Cup replay before eventually coming up short thanks to an extra-time wonder goal from Allan Saint-Maximin.
A giant-killing looked unlikely as Newcastle bossed the early exchanges and raced to a 2-0 lead inside thirty minutes. However, a spirited comeback saw Oxford level at ninety minutes thanks to a quality free-kick from Liam Kelly and a stunning equaliser in added time from Nathan Holland.
Nonetheless, Maximin proved to be the difference in an uncomfortable night for the Geordies at the Kassam Stadium, leaving Oxford hearts broken and booking his side a trip to Championship high-flyers West Brom in the fifth round.
Newcastle fans celebrated wildly at the final whistle, and this delight was reflected in the reaction to the result on social media. Still, many fans offered respect to Oxford’s scintillating performance, with some believing the Magpies didn’t deserve the win.
Geordie humour was also never far from the surface.
Here is a selection of responses to the result by Newcastle fans on Twitter.

Joelinton spends more time on dying his hair than actually training

Hats off to you Oxford you pushed us all the way and you played well in both games. Kelly looks a good player. Play like that and you’ll get promotion. Good luck for the rest of the season 👍

Good luck for the rest of your season guys! As a NUFC fan, you deserved our place! I’m not celebrating our win tonight as you did yourselves proud! Wish we had a manager as passionate at times!
