League One league leaders Rotherham United have announced skipper Richard Wood has signed a new deal with the club until the end of next season.

The thirty-four-year-old has made one hundred and forty-three appearances for the Millers since joining from Charlton Atletic in 2014.

The former Coventry City and Sheffield United centre-back led Rotherham to promotion in 2018, scoring twice at Wembley in their playoff final victory over Shrewsbury Town.

He’s once again been a crucial figure this campaign, scoring three goals in the Millers past seven games as the South Yorkshire outfit have risen to the top of the third tier rankings.

A firm fan favourite, Wood referred to his very own terrace song when speaking of the deal to the club’s official website. He said: ‘I’m very happy, that’s why they call me the Magic Man – I’ve pulled another contract out the hat.’

The delighted Millers captain added: ‘I’m really pleased to get it sorted and I’m enjoying my football.’

‘The main aim is automatic promotion. Now I’ve got this deal sorted out I want us to push on and make sure we go up as champions, then, as club captain, I’ll be able to lift that trophy. That’s what we all want, and I definitely want it.’

The club’s current longest-serving player took time to settle in South Yorkshire. He initially spent time on loan at Crawley, Fleetwood, and Chesterfield before finally finding his feet, and his popularity at the club is clear from the response to the news on social media from thrilled and complimentary Millers fans.

Here is a small selection of responses to the news on Twitter.
