Portsmouth boss Kenny Jackett is reported to be eager to bring Barnsley defender Dimitri Cavare to Fratton Park to aid their promotion assault.
According to the Portsmouth News, Cavare is being targeted for an Oakwell exit as they clear out their squad ahead of a relegation battle. Pompey could be set to replace them in the Championship after a good run of form which has seen them climb the table.
They won 2-1 against a tough Wimbledon side yesterday afternoon, but are looking to bolster their wide defensive options and the former French youth international fits the bill.
Cavare, who played for Rennes and Lens in France before a move to the UK, is a right back by trade. He did feature for France at Under 20 level, but later opted to play for Guadeloupe as a senior international.
Cavare appeared 44 times for the Tykes as they won the League One title last season, but has struggled for games since Barnsey sacked Daniel Stendel. Gerhard Struber came in on November 20th and Cavare’s last game for the club came on November 27th.
Pompey have already added Reeco Hackett-Fairchild and Cameron McGeehan in a busy transfer window.
Cavare really shouldn’t be on his way out of Barnsley; he was a stalwart of their title win last season and is a victim of the managerial upheaval at Oakwell.
Their loss would be Pompey’s gain though and an experienced player like him, still young but knowing the league, would be a big signing.
