Blackburn Rovers eye swoop for former Spurs prospect excelling in L1

Blackburn Rovers are looking to make a move for Gillingham’s Connor Ogilvie this winter, as reported by Football Insider.

The 23-year-old joined the Gills in the summer after a couple of loan spells at Priestfield and has quickly settled into their defence. He has enjoyed a solid campaign for Steve Evans’ side, scoring three goals in 21 League One appearances, including the winner last weekend against Rochdale.

He’s a versatile defender, able to play centrally or at left back and began his career on the books of Premier League giants Spurs. He struggled to break through at White Hart Lane, but enjoyed two loan spells with Stevenage before a couple more with Gillingham.

Capped by England at Under 16 and Under 17 level, the Waltham Abbey born defender has certainly helped push Evans’ side up the League One table after becoming the controversial manager’s first signing for the Gills.

Blackburn are currently 13th in the Championship and need desperately to bring in a new left back. Stewart Downing and Amari’i Bell both featured there in the defeat at Huddersfield Town this weekend, with loanee Greg Cunningham ruled out for the season in autumn.

Our View

This news is hardly surprising. Ogilvie has excelled at Gillingham and has been a big part of their push up the table this season.

Their approach is based very much on keeping solid at the back, repelling attacks and snatching wins by a solitary goal. They’re incredibly effective at what they do and although Evans won’t want to lose a key player, it would bring in money to allow him to trade more players.

If there’s one thing the Scot loves to do, it is trade players. One can only imagine he didn’t have many Panini stickers to swap as a kid and is making up for the lost time in adulthood.
