League Two Scunthorpe United ended a seven-game unbeaten run for Blackpool and in doing so, notched their fourth win on the bounce with a 3-1 victory at Bloomfield Road last night in the EFL Trophy.

Seasiders manager Simon Grayson made eight changes from the team that started at Ipswich at the weekend. However, those players on the fringes did nothing to stake their claim for a start in Grayson’s first choice eleven with a woeful display against a full-strength Iron.

Blackpool were 2-0 down at half-time and despite being given hope of a comeback with a Joe Nuttall strike, a Callum Guy red card with fifteen minutes left saw the Iron regain the initiative and seal a place in the next round with a second goal of the match from Abo Eisa.

Grayson criticised his players for lack of effort in his post-match comments, but unusually for the aftermath of a defeat, social media was divided over the importance of the result. Some fans were not happy with the display and levelled criticism at Grayson for preparing the team poorly while others were more philosophical, believing the much-maligned competition could have become a distraction from the club’s main aim, which is to get promotion to the Championship.

Here is a selection of their responses to the result on Twitter.
