Former Hull target signs new deal at Doncaster amid interest from several clubs

Doncaster Rovers skipper Ben Whiteman has signed a new contract at the club amid keen interest from several other clubs as reported by the Sheffield Star.

The twenty-three-year-old has signed a deal running until the summer of 2023.

The report claims Whiteman was the subject of a bid from Championship outfit Hull City in the summer, but former Rovers manager Grant McCann failed to lure the midfielder to the KCOM Stadium.

It also suggests the number of clubs keeping tabs on the former Sheffield United trainee had since reached double figures.

Whiteman left the Blades to join Rovers almost two years ago after making only twelve senior appearances, and his progress has since been outstanding. He has made one hundred and twenty-one outings for Donny after initially joining on loan, and his status as a key man at the club was confirmed when new boss Darren Moore appointed him to captain in the summer.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Whiteman said: ‘It is flattering to have this interest from clubs in the Championship – I back myself to play there and feel I’m ready to do so, but this club feels like home, and I want to get there with Rovers this summer.’

Our View

Brilliant news for Rovers fans, Whiteman is a proper Captain Fantastic.

Doncaster are not hitting the heights of last season just yet, but recent signs are they are starting to make progress under Darren Moore.

Whiteman’s signing shows ambition and if they can land a decent striker in January a late push for the playoffs cannot be ruled out.
