Transfer news emerges which should delight Doncaster Rovers fans

Arsenal are in talks with Doncaster Rovers over the extension of Ben Sheaf’s loan at the Keepmoat, as reported by Football Insider.

The Dartford-born 21-year-old has seriously impressed in League One this season, making 14 appearances for Darren Moore’s side. He joined on a half-season loan, but it’s now apparent that both parties are interested in making that a full-season stint.

Sheaf has previously played on loan at Stevenage, again impressing, during a loan stint last season. His Arsenal chances have been limited, but he is still quite young. He did make a European appearance for the Gunners, coming on as an 89th-minute substitute for Francis Coquelin in a 1–0 victory over Red Star Belgrade in 2017.

With a pass accuracy of 86.4% and 87.93 actions per game, 73% of which are positive (stats courtesy of Wyscout), Sheaf has shown himself to be a real force for good in the Doncaster midfield and a key reason they have survived the blow of losing their manager so early in the season. This news will surely be a big comfort to their supporters, fearful of his departure in the winter window.

Doncaster are currently 13th in League One, two wins shy of the top six having been a play-off semi-finalist last season.

Our View

This is a big bit of news for Donny fans. Sheaf is wise beyond his years, tough and dominant but with the vitality of youth driving him.

Can he break through at Arsenal? I wouldn’t rule it out. What he does need is more senior football, so perhaps six more months at Doncaster before a Championship loan.

It does surprise me he isn’t being touted around the second tier now, but as his development has progressed it’s evident he’s shining at the Keepmoat and obviously, that’s in Arsenal’s best interests.
