Prickly Ipswich boss bullish ahead of promotion six-pointer

Paul Lambert was in no mood to be questioned about Wycombe Wanderers as they moved five points clear at the top of the League One table this weekend.

Ipswich were held to a 2-2 draw by Blackpool, whilst the Chairboys bagged a 92nd-minute penalty to defeat a stubborn Doncaster Rovers. The two sides meet tomorrow in an early six-pointer, but Lambert wasn’t impressed with East Anglian Daily Times reporter Stuart Watson’s line of questioning.

He was asked about Wycombe scoring late on to open up the gap, with the fiery Scot immediately on the defensive.

“It’s a disaster isn’t it!? An absolute unbelievable disaster! Honestly! I think we’ve played, what, 45 games and have one game left… It’s a disaster!”

When Watson then claimed their fixture tomorrow night felt like a big game, former Celtic man Lambert continued with his sarcastic responses.

“Honestly, it’s a disaster! We’ve played 17 games, yeah? Maybe we can lose the title this month. Can we lose it? Can we lose the title this month? Maybe not. Let’s see what happens in May. We’ve got two games in hand and we’re a good side. Make no mistake about it, we’re a good side.”

The Tractor Boys led 1-0 at Portman Road courtesy of Gwion Edwards’ goal, but Joe Nuttall and Jay Spearing gave the visitors a 2-1 lead. Luke Garbutt netted a penalty just before the hour mark to restore parity, but the home side were unable to find a winner.

Despite being five points behind Gareth Ainsworth’s side, they have two games in hand courtesy of international breaks.

Our View

I’ve heard from various pros that Lambert is a great man-manager and a top person to have to mentor your career. What he has in backroom ability seems to be lacking in charisma with the press.

All season he’s been bemoaning something; lack of funds, competition, injuries. His side are flying at the moment and are surely promotion favourites, yet he couldn’t even answer a straight question with a straight, fair answer.

Still, defeat tomorrow night really would put pressure on him, which sounds ridiculous after just a few months, but their fans expect Championship football next season and to not have it would be an unmitigated disaster.
