Coventry City boss makes interesting transfer revelation

Mark Robins has been discussing Coventry City’s transfer policy ahead of the January window opening, as reported by Coventry Live.

Robins saw his high-flying side agonisingly held to a draw at the Stadium of Light this weekend, despite leading Sunderland for much of their encounter. Dom Hyam’s first-half opener looked to have been enough to send them up to third, but Benji Kimpioka’s late goal salvaged some face for the hosts.

The Sky Blues are still in the hunt for a top-six place and harbour hopes of a Championship return for the first time since 2012. They’ll be hoping to add some value to the squad in the winter window, although only one on a permanent move according to the boss.

Robins discussed his talks with their head of recruitment, Chris Badlan, after the 1-1 draw with Sunderland.

“Chris has done a lot of his work and I meet with him on a regular basis,” said the former Scunthorpe boss.

“I met with him last week and I’m really, possibly, only looking at one. There are two or three options but I don’t need to do a great deal. Hopefully we can do a little bit but I don’t need to do a lot.”

With Matty Godden and Jordy Hiwula both out at present, Robins went on to say his focus was on getting his current squad fit and firing, but that he did have different routes he could take, should the need arise.

“I just need to keep things going until we get there,” he added. “The players have got to keep doing what they’re doing and then I can address it later on. But there will be options to be able to do something, should the need arise.”

Coventry host Ipswich Town in the FA Cup this weekend, with the same fixture taking place a week later in the League. In between, they travel to relegation-haunted MK Dons.

Our View

Coventry’s business in the summer was shrewd and they’re surely going to want to build on that, but not make wholesale changes.

It’ll be about adding depth to the squad, rather than changing too much. It also depends on whether any players are heading out; Sam McCallum has been the subject of speculation over the autumn period and if he goes, there could be a bigger war chest for the manager to spend.
