Wolves teenager relishing the challenge of League One football

Wolves teenager Ryan Giles is enjoying life on loan at League One Shrewsbury Town, as reported by the Premier League club’s official website.

The nineteen-year-old has made fifteen appearances across all competitions since signing for the Shrews on a season-long loan deal in the summer and revealed he felt it was ‘going well’ in Shropshire.

Playing primarily at wing-back, the versatile Giles has fitted seamlessly into the 3-5-2 formation employed by Salop boss, and former Wolves favourite Sam Ricketts, gaining much-needed experience in the cut and thrust of regular League One football.

Having scored on his debut, the talented youngster has impressed the Salop faithful, with his pacy displays on Shrewsbury’s left flank also earning international recognition. Giles was called up for the England Under-20s in September, and he’s clearly enjoying the challenge of consistently playing first-team football after starring in Wolves successful under-23 side.

He said: ‘I’ve played a lot of league games so far and to straight away get game time is a massive positive for me and my development. It’s completely different to what I’ve been used to, and it’s a challenge I needed, being around a first-team environment and playing a game I’m not used to as much, with a lot of first and second balls. It’s been very good so far, I’ve just got to keep getting as many games under my belt as I can and keep learning.’

The weekend saw his return from injury with a late substitute appearance during Shrewbury’s 1-1 draw with League Two high-flyers Bradford City and Giles was keen to put the injury behind him, keep improving and reclaim his place in Ricketts starting eleven. ‘I’m playing against bigger, stronger players, and maybe having to do things differently is going to make me better. All these different experiences so far have really helped me push on, and I want to keep going.’

Shrewsbury are eleventh in League One, and while they have proved very difficult to beat, they perhaps need to convert hard-fought draws into wins if they are to mount a serious push for the playoffs.

Our View

Giles is one to watch with massive potential to have a big future in the game.

He is highly-regarded at Wolves, and given time; he will be challenging for a spot in their first-team.

His goal on his debut for Shrewsbury was a screamer and illustrated his quality perfectly.

Shrewsbury are enjoying having him and the Salop faithful could well be watching a star of the future.
