Southend United’s week has gone from bad to worse after defender Harry Lennon was banished to the Under 23s, as reported by the BBC.
The defender, who has played 14 times this season, was part of the Shrimpers side that went down 1-0 to non-league Dover at Crabble this weekend, eliminating them from the FA Cup.
Hours after, still wearing his Southend United tracksuit, the Romford-born player was spotted in a pub drinking with Dover players. The club have reacted quickly by demoting him to the Under 23 squad, but it on exasperates their troubles.
As well as the FA Cup defeat and Lennon’s indiscretion, they’re the subject of a winding-up order at present and are only being kept off the bottom of League One by crisis-club Bolton Wanderers.
Sol Campbell recently took over after Kevin Bond resigned just six matches into the season. It looks like being a long, hard slog for the Southend fans, who saw their side narrowly avoid relegation by winning on the last day of last season.
It might all be over and done with long before the final game, especially given that Lennon is a key figure at thew back for them. It seems these Southend fans don’t want to see him in a Blues shirt again.
