Portsmouth are keen on Motherwell’s in-form midfielder Liam Polworth as reported by the Daily Record.
The Scottish paper claims Pompey have been scouting the playmaker with a view to making a move in the January transfer window.
There is little doubt Polworth has been in great form this season. He’s been an ever-present for the Well since arriving from Inverness in the summer, contributing an impressive nine assists from midfield.
The twenty-five-year-old is on Pompey boss Kenny Jackett’s radar as he attempts to add some creativity to his misfiring side. Out of the twenty-three teams in League One, only four other teams have scored less than Pompey so far his campaign, despite the big-money signing of John Marquis in the summer.
Further reports suggest if Jackett is considering a move, he might face stiff resistance from Motherwell, who are in an excellent financial position and in the running for a European spot after an impressive start to the season under Steven Robinson.
Polworth signed a two-year-deal at Fir Park in the summer after catching the eye with some outstanding displays for Inverness Caledonian Thistle, where he became the club’s youngest ever player when he made his debut aged just sixteen in May 2011. He went on to score nineteen times in two hundred and four appearances for the Highlanders before opting to leave to further his career at a higher level with Motherwell.
Our View
Polworth looks a decent player, but he won’t be the only playmaker linked with Portsmouth as the January window approaches.
Pompey fans are heavily criticising Jackett’s side for being too negative, and they will be desperately searching for a creative player who can unlock League One defences in January.
