On loan Newcastle man draws praise from EFL boss

Wycombe Wanderers boss Gareth Ainsworth has claimed Rolando Aarons is ‘definitely above his level’ after the winger’s goal in their 1-0 win against Shrewsbury this weekend.

Aarons snatched the only goals of a tense encounter at Adams Park to send Wycombe top of the table against Sam Ricketts’ side. Having spent time at Sheffield Wednesday last season, Aarons shocked the football world with a move to Buckinghamshire in the summer.

That decision is certainly one that’s paying off for in-demand manager Ainsworth.

“He is a great player and he will terrorise defences in this league and he is definitely above this level,” said Ainsworth, who has been linked with the Lincoln City and Sunderland jobs in recent weeks.

“That goal will give him confidence. The boys know that they have to keep their levels high if they want to stay in this team.”

Oddly, Newcastle manager Steve Bruce allowed Aarons to depart on loan, despite being the manager of Sheffield Wednesday when he joined them on loan. The Jamaican-born 23-year-old has previously spent time on loan with Hellas Verona and Slovan Liberec, as well as representing England at Under 20 level.

His goal put Wycombe three points clear of Ipswich Town, albeit having played two matches more.

Our View

Aarons signing was a real coup for Wycombe. He’s not the sort of player you expect to see turning out for a robust and organised unit such as the Chairboys, but he’s now finding his feet after a slow start.

He’s made just three starts in League One so far, with hopes now high that he can kick on and help Wycombe forge a real promotion challenge.

With Rob Couhig’s investment having been rubber-stamped, Wycombe will be hoping to see Championship football nestling in sight of the Chilterns in the not-too-distant future.
