Manchester United are still plotting a move for League One prodigy Luke Matheson despite the youngster recently signing his first professional contract with Rochdale.
Football insider claim a United source has revealed the club remain interested in the teenager as they assess their long-term full-back options.
The seventeen-year-old became Rochdale’s youngest-ever player when he made his debut for his hometown club at the age of fifteen in September 2018. He’s already notched up seventeen senior outings for the League One outfit and is considered one of the best players in the country in his age group.
He became the subject of enormous national media attention when he scored at Old Trafford in September during a Carabao Cup tie which United eventually won on penalties after it emerged he was back at school the following morning to take a psychology test.
Speculation recently emerged that United and neighbours City were both interested in Matheson. However, according to Football Insider, neither are likely to make a move in January with both preferring to monitor his progress with a view to making a summer swoop.
Rochdale announced yesterday the sought-after teenager had signed a three-year deal with the club.
Our View
It seems clear it is only a matter of time before Matheson moves on to bigger things.
However, our advice would be to stay at Rochdale for as long as possible.
Once he goes, he will instantly become a small fish in a huge pond, something that can break youngsters used to regular first-team football.
He seems level headed with a good support network, so we are confident he will eventually make the right decision on when to go.
