‘Worst Walsall team I’ve watched in over 40 years’ – Plenty of angry Walsall fans react to another home defeat

Walsall slumped to their third defeat in a row at the Bescot Stadium on Saturday as high-flying Cheltenham Town ran out 2-1 winners.

With only one home win all season the atmosphere at Walsall is currently somewhat joyless, and the latest defeat did nothing to lift the gloom.

Goals from Ben Tozer and Luke Varney either side of Josh Gordan’s penalty were enough to give the visitors a happy coach journey home, with the victory moving Michael Duff’s impressive unit up to fifth.

Meanwhile, Walsall are languishing at the wrong end of the League Two table, in nineteenth after their seventh league defeat before the clocks go back.

Following his appointment in May, Darrell Clarke set about dismantling the squad that suffered League One relegation last season, but his rebuilding appears to have done nothing to halt the Saddlers pitiful slide, and he’s now starting to come under intense pressure from supporters angry at the club’s plight.

As recently as 2016 the Saddlers were serious challengers for League One promotion, but the latest defeat means they are now anxiously looking over their shoulder, nervous about retaining their EFL status.

They travel to fellow strugglers Oldham on Tuesday for a fixture that already has the feel of a relegation six-pointer.

Fans anger was borne out when they took to social media to react to the defeat, and plenty didn’t hold back as the following selection of responses to the result on Twitter illustrate.
