‘Can’t see it helping much’, ‘Welcome to the circus’ – Many Oldham fans react as club makes transfer annoucement

Oldham Athletic have signed midfielder Chris McCann on a short-term deal, as reported by the club’s official website.

The 32-year-old has previously played for Burnley, making 268 appearances and playing a role in the Clarets side that won promotion to the Premier League in 2009. He has been a free agent since July after leaving MLS side DC United, for whom he made six appearances.

McCann could make his Latics debut against Macclesfield on Saturday and was last playing on English soil in 2016/17 when he joined Coventry City on loan from Atalanta, another MLS side. He was also a part of the Wigan squad that won League One in 2015/16.

“Chris has been training with us for a few weeks now and has impressed in every department,” boss Dino Maamria said.

“His experience in the game can only help us moving forwards as a team and I’m delighted we’ve been able to bring him in to boost my options.”

Whilst he may be a player of experience that can add value to the Oldham squad, recent happenings at the club have led fans to meet the news with a mix of pessimism and reluctance.

They’re used to being disappointed, seeing players and managers come and go and have been commenting on social media upon as McCann arrives at Boundary Park.
