Portsmouth’s poor start to the season continued after they were held 0-0 at Fratton Park by Steve Evans’ Gillingham side.
Goalkeeper Jack Bonham was the hero for the visitors, pulling off three good saves at Fratton Park to leave the home crowd baying for the blood of manager Kenny Jackett.
The Gills went into the game looking for a point and nothing more; they offered little in the way of attacking threat, but were comfortable for much of the game against a toothless Pompey.
Gareth Evans’ almost gave the home side the lead in the second-minute, but his shot from outside the area drew a fine save from Bonham, diving low to turn the ball behind. Ben Close then had a an effort saved by Bonham, who impressed all afternoon.
Sean Raggett did have Bomham beaten, but his thumping header came back off the post and the rebound was scrambled clear. Finally, another smart save from Bonham kept out Ellis Harrison’s low drive.
Whilst it may have been a case of not taking their chances, Pompey fans have been left increasingly frustrated at their side’s lack of attacking intent. As far back as last season, they’ve been unable to break down stubborn sides and the two blank play-off semi-final outings have proven that.
One thing is for sure; these supporters want to see the end of Kenny Jackett.
