Sunderland have been given permission to speak to Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth according to the Sunderland Echo.
The Black Cats are hunting a new manager after sacking Jack Ross in the week following a humiliating 2-0 defeat against Lincoln City. Ironically, Ainsworth was favourite for the Lincoln job last month, reportedly turning it down to remain at Adams Park.
He’s taken the Chairboys from the bottom of League Two right to the upper echelons of League One, but has a reputation for some rather direct, aggressive football.
In a game against Sunderland last season his side came in for some criticism, Duncan Watmore picking up a nasty injury after crude challenges seemingly prompted from the sidelines.
That’s left Ainsworth as a man the fans would not want to see, despite his obvious credentials. He’s got Wycombe playing some nice football this season and he was responsible for developing Luke O’Nien into the player Sunderland fans love today. That’s not enough to convince these fans, who are not interested in seeing him in the dugout at the Stadium of Light.

I think people are being too critical of him already. The reason we have luke o'nien is due to the work this guys done with him. The same people crying out for luke to be played in the right position are the people writing him off already. Just set him up to fail like others b4
