‘So unlucky guys. If Ole stays beyond December it’s your fault’ – Plenty of Man Utd fans praise Rochdale after cup heroics

Rochdale put up a heroic performance at Premier League Manchester United in the third round of the Carabao Cup last night but suffered penalty shoot-out heartbreak after United scored all five of their efforts.

The lottery of penalties came after a spirited performance full of desire by Dale, which saw sixteen-year-old Luke Matheson smash home an equaliser with fourteen minutes remaining following latest United wonder kid Mason Greenwood’s sixty-eighth-minute opener.

It was a tense evening at Old Trafford as the humble League One outfit frustrated their illustrious hosts with a tremendous showing which saw them repel thirty-one Man Utd efforts on goal and receive a standing ovation from the incredible backing of 5,500 travelling fans at the end, in stark contrast to United’s victorious millionaire squad which skulked off rather sheepishly.

Ultimately, Sergio Romero’s shoot-out stop from the unfortunate Jimmy Keohane was the only thing that separated the teams, and many of the Premier League club’s supporters soon took to social media to congratulate Rochdale on their efforts, with many believing the best side had lost.

From the reaction to the display, everyone connected with the League One outfit can certainly hold their heads up high this morning.

Judge for yourself from this small selection of Man Utd supporters respectful responses to the result and performance on Twitter.
