On the morning of the first South-Coast derby for seven years, Talksport pundit Danny Mills has once again courted controversy by claiming the match is not a big derby.
Mills made the comments on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.
Portsmouth play Southampton tonight in the third round of the Carabao Cup in what will be a hostile and fierce atmosphere at a sold-out Fratton Park. Only twenty miles separate the two clubs, and the intense rivalry stems from the differing nature of their respective Ports, local politics, economics, and social history of the relationship between the two cities that is sometimes based on historical fact, but sometimes arguably not.
Whatever the reasons, it is a game that is not for the faint-hearted both on and off the pitch. Indeed, Jamie Redknapp recently said it was the most intimidating atmosphere he ever played in when writing in his Daily Mail column, and he’s played in the Merseyside derby and for Liverpool against Manchester United.
While Mills was castigated on social media for his opinion by many angry supporters, upset at his lack of research and ignorance, others suggested Mills and the radio station was more intelligent than they seemed with the controversial claim getting Mills and the station trending on Twitter on the day of the big match.
Here is a selection of responses to Mills comments on Twitter.
