Macclesfield Town have appointed Daryl McMahon as their new head coach to succeed ex-England defender Sol Campbell.
Campbell left the club last week, and the Silkmen have moved quickly to appoint a successor announcing the appointment last night on the club’s official website.
McMahon has no EFL experience having managed Ebbsfleet in the National League before his departure in November 2018. Widely-regarded as one of the most promising up and coming managers in non-league football, the thirty-six-year-old secured two consecutive second-place finishes in the National League South with Ebbsfleet, before finally securing promotion to the fifth tier with a play-off final victory over Chelmsford City in 2017.
Charlton and Brighton boss Steve Gritt and Silkmen legend Danny Whitaker complete the new coaching set-up.
The former Leyton Orient and Stevenage midfielder has signed a contract until the end of the season and will be hoping to build on the Macclesfield’s excellent start to the season when he takes charge of his first game at home to Morecambe this evening.
The Silkmen have taken six points from their opening three League Two fixtures after narrowly avoiding relegation last season.
Fans soon took to social media to comment on the appointment with many excited at the club’s decision to give an opportunity to a young, hungry manager. Campbell was a big name, and while McMahon might not have his glitz and glamour, most supporters were delighted to see him arrive at the helm.
Here’s a selection of their responses to the news on Twitter.
Decent credentials from lower down the pyramid, but it’s Macc taking another chance. Could work out to be a stroke of genius, giving a forward thinking management team a chance at this level, or could work out to be Mills 2.0. Time will tell!

The bloke has 128 wins and 21 loses with ebbsfleet. He’s the best manager we could ask for under our circumstances. Give him a chance
