Blackpool slipped out of the EFL Cup at the first round stage last night, courtesy of a penalty shoot-out defeat at the hands of Macclesfield Town.
Sol Campbell’s side have been widely tipped for the drop this season, but they put in a confident and composed display against the Tangerines. They led 2-1 until the final minutes when anΒ Armand Gnanduillet looked to have spared Blackpool’s blushes.
It wasn’t to be, the Silkmen held their nerve from 12-yards and ended up winning 4-2 on spot kicks, setting up a second round tie away at Grimsby Town.
Blackpool have started the season well, winning both of their opening fixtures to lead the early League One table. Not much can be read into two matches, nor a cup exit on penalties, which seems to be the thought process of many of their supporters on Twitter.
Despite the loss to League Two opposition, there has been enough promise in the opening displays to prevent fans from panicking, as you’ll read from their social media replies.
