‘Deserves to start on Saturday now’ – Plenty of Southend fans react as homegrown hero impresses

17-year-old Charlie Kelman introduced himself to Southend fans last season by scoring from inside his own half, marking him out as one for the future.

Since then, he’s been used sparingly as a substitute, but in the EFL Cup this evening he’s staked a claim for a starting place this weekend against Lincoln City.

His side were losing 1-0 against League Two side Stevenage when Kelman struck, nodding home to bring the scores level. Minutes later he took a superb touch before lashing a strike past Paul Farman to give his side a 2-1 lead.

Southend have lost both of their opening league games, 1-0 against Coventry City and 3-1 at home against Blackpool. They’ve looked lacklustre in attack, but the youngster certainly has a vibrancy to his play that excites supporters.

They’re calling for him to start this weekend as Southend travel to Sincil Bank, with them preferring him to Theo Robinson and former Scunthorpe man Stephen Humphrys.

Here’s a selection of their responses from twitter this evening.
