Manchester United prospect makes League Two loan switch

League Two side Morecambe have signed defender George Tanner on a season-long loan from Manchester United, as reported by the official site.

The 19-year-old has penned a deal which will see him remain with the Shrimps until the end of the season.

Morecambe earned their first point of the season this weekend, taking a 2-0 lead early on against Mansfield Town, only for the home side to fight back for a draw.

The Red Devils’ left-back has played at Under 18 and Under 23 level for his parent club, but hasn’t been near the first team setup.

Morecambe boss Jim Bentley said: “George comes highly rated and will be a good addition to our defensive ranks. We are looking forward to working with him over the coming months.’’

Tanner signed his first professional deal with his boyhood club in January 2018, having converted to full back a few months before. he can play on the flank as well and will add versatility to the Morecambe side.

Our View

It’s great to see young English talent getting a chance to play senior football. Regan Poole did it with Newport last season and Kieran O’Hara got the same exposure at Macclesfield. Both proved to be shrewd signings and hopefully, Tanner will too.

Morecambe are perennial strugglers, but that will help build character and attitude. They’ve got a tight-knit group of players who work tremendously well as a team and that’s going to be a great environment for Tanner to thrive in.
