Former Wolves, West Ham and Norwich City winger Matt Jarvis, is training with Gillingham the club have confirmed.
It is familiar territory for Jarvis, who made over one hundred league appearance for the Gills between 2003 and 2007.
The thirty-three-year-old is without a club following his release by Norwich at the end of last season and Gillingham manager Steve Evans told the Kent Messanger he wanted to see a bit more of Jarvis in training before making a call on the possibility of a deal. He said: ‘He’s trained for a few days now, but it would be far too early for me to be judgmental and make a call.’
‘I told him I would like to see a bit more of a few things and he has taken it onboard. We will see him again in training.’
Jarvis left Priestfield for Wolves where his performances earnt him an England cap and a big-money move to West Ham in 2012. A sell-on clause in the £600,000 deal that took Jarvis to Molineux brought a considerable cash windfall to the Gills who received a share of the £7.5 million fee, money which helped fund their League Two title-winning season in 2012/13.
After three years in East London, he moved to Norwich City, initially on loan before making a £2.5m permanent switch and was playing well until a serious injury picked up towards the end of the 2015/16 season but a brake on his progress.
He never regained the form of previous years and struggled to re-establish himself at Carrow Road. He spent the second half of last season on loan at League One rivals Walsall, making ten appearances for the Saddlers, including playing a starring role in their 3-0 victory over the Gills in January.
Our View
It will be all about Jarvis proving his fitness if Evans is going to offer him a deal.
Even at thirty-three, he would be too good for League One, provided he can stay fit.
Gillingham will want players that can stay the course, but if a pay as you play deal, or short term contract with an extended option can be agreed, Jarvis might once again be terrorising opposition full-backs on the wings at Priestfield.
