Sunderland announced the capture of Reading forward Marc McNulty on a season-long loan yesterday.
They’ve been in the market for a striker all summer, with a number of names mooted as possible targets. Freddie Ladapo was one, John Marquis another, but it’s McNulty who gets the chance to break up the £5m monopoly of Wyke and Grigg.
Both players struggled for form last season and the Scot arrives on the back of a successful loan spell with Hibernian. He netted eight times in 17 fixtures, something he’ll hope to replicate this season at the Stadium of Light.
McNulty should fit nicely into the Black Cats forward line, either deep behind Grigg or as the main striker. it does pose a huge question about Charlie Wyke’s future, but with £1m tied up in him he’s sure to be staying put for now.
Sunderland fans were mostly delighted to see the new arrival in red and white, but other fans weren’t so impressed. A number of Coventry and Reading fans hijacked the announcement to express a few opinions of their own.
