Wycombe Wanderers have completed three signings on a busy day in Buckinghamshire.
Gareth Ainsworth snared former CSKA Moscow midfielder Jacob Gardiner-Smith on a one-year deal, having seen him impress in a trial. The 22-year-old began his career in Russia, breaking into the senior side with Zenit St Petersburg before moving back to the UK last year.
Former Coventry City right back Jack Grimmer has also penned a deal with the Chairboys. He began his career with Aberdeen, later plying his trade with Fulham and enjoying a loan spell with Shrewsbury. He played a key role in the Sky Blues 2017 EFL Trophy win, as well as helping them to promotion from League Two in 2018.
The day’s business was completed with the capture of QPR youngster Giles Phillips on a season-long loan deal.
Ainsworth thanked the Hoops for trusting them with another player after borrowing Paul Smyth last week.
“Once again I’d like to thank QPR for trusting us with another of their young talents,” he said.
“We saw Paul Smyth making an outstanding first impression on Saturday and now Giles comes into a club where he’ll fit really well into our culture and leave here a better player than when he joined, I’m sure of it.”
Our View
There has been some good business done by Wycombe this week. Of these three, Grimmer is the one we really like. He looked assured for Coventry and was unlucky to find himself on the fringes last season.
Smyth is a big name to drop into League One, certainly dwarfing Phillips, but Wycombe have a good record with QPR youth. Ebere Eze spent time on loan with the Chairboys before breaking into the first team at Loftus Road and Phillips will hope to do the same.
