‘Incredible news,’ ‘Very average player’ – These Oldham fans give mixed reaction to latest club update

Tom Hamer has signed a two-year contract extension with Oldham Athletic keeping him at the club until 2022.

The nineteen-year-old defender joined Oldham in 2015 and is a Boundary Park academy graduate.

He made his first-team debut in the EFL Trophy win over Leicester under-21s in January 2018 and became an established first-team regular last season, making thirty-five appearance for the Latics across all competitions.

The news was greeted with a mixed reaction by supporters on social media with some congratulating the club on getting a young player tied to a long-term deal while others felt he was just an average player at best.

Although the majority of the reaction appeared positive, there was also some mention of Peter Clarke, the former club captain who was controversially released by the Latics at the end of last season just days after winning the clubs Player of the Season award, with many supporters still not over that news.

Here is a selection of Oldham fans responses to the latest club update on Twitter.

  1. Oldham have the most moaning fickle fans in League football. Tom is a valuable asset and hence he deserves his 2 yr contract. He will do the talking for himself when on the pitch and good luck to him for the coming season. Hope he doesn’t read the negativity that certain fans have and makes them eat their words.

  2. The fans who wrote them stupid crazy negative comments know nothing about football. The lad is ONLY 19 and will soon be as good or mabe better than Edmondson. Give the lad a chance ,he is very very young and very few 17 or 18 year olds (as he was ) break into any first team of the 92 clubs.

  3. Well said Baz but as you know these days and previously no matter what the Club do there is always some who find fault and in this case don’t give any backing to a good footballer who will be an asset to us or any other club he may play for in the future.

  4. I agree Stephen and this happens at many teams in the EFL and Premier league, although you are right saying Oldham have the most moaning fickle fans in league football. I am sure Tom will prove his critics wrong in the next 2 seasons.
