Colchester boss reveals new signings unlikely amid winger speculation

Colchester United head coach John McGreal has revealed it is unlikely the club will do any more summer business amid reports linking the club with non-league winger Reggie Young.

Young was reportedly on trial with the U’s in pre-season and appeared in two friendlies, but speaking to the Daily Gazette McGreal seemed to remove any hope of the player joining the Essex outfit. ‘We’re probably not looking to do any more business,’ he said.

Football Insider reported this morning that Barnsley from the Championship and an unnamed League One club were now monitoring the speedy winger who impressed during a loan spell at Farnborough last season, scoring ten goals and providing six assists after joining from parent club Woking in October.

The twenty-year-old is a free agent this summer after turning down a new deal at Woking, and any compensation due to them is thought to be minimal, but McGreal insisted he was happy with his summer business. Dean Gerken, Jevani Brown, Paris Cowan-Hall, Omar Sowunmi, Luke Gambin and Michael Fernandes have all signed for the U’s who have seen big-name players such as Sammie Szmodics, Frankie Kent and Rene Gilmartin leave for clubs higher up the EFL.

McGreal  told the Gazette: ‘At this minute, you can never say never because there are still three weeks to go and as a head coach, you adapt to whatever happens,’ before adding ‘But at this moment, I wouldn’t say we’re overly looking unless something drastic happens.’

Our View

McGreal has done well this summer to re-shape a squad after some high profile departures.

He may just be being coy with the Young move in the background, but it looks like Barnsley might well have used their financial muscle to tempt the player to Yorkshire.

Nonetheless, Colchester will be ok next season, and we expect them to make a playoff push once again even in a season of transition.
