Mansfield Town’s friendly with Stockport County has been called off on police advice, as reported by the club’s official Twitter feed.
The home clash with the Hatters was scheduled to take place at Field Mill on Saturday, July 27, but has been cancelled after discussions with Nottinghamshire police.
The match has fallen victim to another event being held on the same day; Nottingham Pride. Much of the police force will be covering that event and clearly they feel they can’t look after both.
But a spokesman for the club said: “The decision to cancel is based on police advice, due to Nottingham Pride taking place on the same date.”
It’s not the first pre-season friendly involving the Stags to attract controversy; last season their clash with Sheffield Wednesday ended in a brawl after Fernando Forestieri sparked trouble with an alleged racist remark, for which he’s been charged.
Losing the fixture is a blow to the Stags pre-season plans as they’ll now have to find an opponent at short notice who is currently free on the weekend before the season starts; no easy task.
These Stags fans are not happy at all.
