Stevenage are eyeing a move for Paul Digby, the Forest Green defender currently one year into his two-year contract at the New Lawn.
As reported by Gloucestershire Live, Digby is surplus to requirements at the New Lawn as Mark Cooper moves into his third season in the Football League with the Gloucestershire side.
Digby only joined them last summer from Mansfield Town and made 38 appearances as they stormed into the top seven. Their charge towards League One was halted by Tranmere in the play-off semi-final, but they’re hoping to go one better this season.
Boro are looking to replace Johnny Hunt, the former Mansfield defender who has left Broadhall Way for Hamilton Academical today and Digby looks to be the perfect candidate. He’s only 24 and has Championship experience with both Barnsley and Ipswich before dropping into League Two with Mansfield.
Digby can play either centre back or right back and stands an imposing 6ft 4in tall. He would have a job on his hands breaking up the excellent pairing of Scott Cuthbert and Ben Nugent, both of whom were excellent for Dino Maamria’s side last season.
Our View
Digby had a decent season at Forest Green, but it seems as though every campaign Cooper wants to have a huge clear out and start again. This is no different, with the defender seemingly set to join Stevenage.
Dino Maamria likes his side to be solid and imposing at the back, something that helped them keep their play-off dream alive until the final day. Ben Nugent was excellent all season, as was Cuthbert, but the former Luton man is not getting any younger.
Digby would fit in nicely with Nugent, but also offer cover at right back if needed.
