Huddersfield Town eye move for sought after League Two defender

Forest Green Rovers defender Nathan McGinley is closing in on a move to the Championship with Huddersfield Town amongst a host of Championship clubs interested in the twenty-two-year-old as reported by the Huddersfield Examiner.

The report claims Championship rivals Nottingham Forest, Bristol City and Swansea City are also keen on the versatile defender.

McGinley made forty-five appearances for Forest Green last season after signing an eighteen-month deal in January. He was initially sent out on loan to the New Lawn by Middlesborough in the summer but soon made the switch permanent, helping Rovers to the League Two Playoffs.

The 22-year-old, who is predominantly a left-back but can play in central defence, also enjoyed a loan spell at Wycombe Wanderers after coming through the youth system at Middlesborough. He made eleven appearances for the Chairboys in the second half of the 2017/18 season, helping them to automatic League Two promotion.

The Examiner also reports that the deal to take Forest Green attacking-midfielder Reece Brown to The John Smith’s Stadium is imminent.

Our View

Huddersfield are in the running for defensive cover following the departure of Chris Lowe and McGinley would give them a player with bags of potential.

However, we do feel he would be little more than a squad player at the moment and that he will need to improve to stake any claim for a consistent first-team place at Championship level.

But then maybe we watched him on a bad day because the amount of interest in him points to a lot better judges thinking he stands a chance in the second tier.

Forest Green are once again looking to turn their squad and find the right blend to take them to the next level, and most fans will probably wish McGinley all the best and look to see who Cooper brings in as a replacement.
