Grant McCann is relaxed about the future of star striker John Marquis, insisting that Doncaster do not need to sell their prized asset as reported by the Doncaster Free Press.
Marquis had a great season in 2018/19, scoring twenty-two times in League One to help Doncaster to the League One playoffs and the sought after frontman is expected to leave the Keepmoat in the summer.
The twenty-seven-year-old initially signed for Rovers on a two-year deal in 2016 following his release by Millwall. He was the club’s top scorer in his first season netting twenty-six goals as Rovers won promotion from League Two earning him a new three-year contract in the summer of 2017.
Rumours of a move to Sunderland in January never materialise, and it now appears Championship clubs are eying move for the prolific marksman with McCann confirming to the local paper the club had received bids bit nowhere near Doncaster’s valuation. He said: I think to score twenty-six goals, he deserves the chance at a Championship club and we won’t stand in his way.
‘We’ve had nothing for four or five days, but there have been two or three bids come in for John.’
‘There’s nothing that meets the club’s valuation – nothing anywhere near it.’
‘The club do not need to sell him.’
Our View
McCann is doing the right thing for Doncaster in attempting to drive the bids up for Marquis, but with the player keen to go, it is a delicate balancing act.
He knows Marriott left Peterborough for Derby for £3 million last summer and will be looking for a figure in that region.
He will still think that after Sunderland paid £4 million for Will Grigg, whoever lands Maquis will be getting a bargain and I tend to agree with him.
Marquis is an outstanding striker about to hit his peak and would be a great signing for a Championship club.
