Leeds United face Premier League opposition in hunt for exciting EFL talent

Leeds United are stepping up their efforts to sign Carlisle United winger Liam McCarron, but face opposition from Wolves, Derby County and Sheffield United.

The Daily Mail reports that they’re looking to launch a £250,000 bid for the 18-year-old, who made 16 appearances for the Cumbrians last season. he grabbed one assist as they failed to make the top seven, but his eye-catching displays have marked him out as one for the future.

Sheffield United may have pipped Leeds to the last Championship promotion place, but Marcelo Bielsa’s side are hoping to get one over on them by grabbing McCarron. The progression from Leeds Under 23 side to first team has been impressive and that may be a factor in the young player’s decision.

David Holdsworth, director of football at Brunton Park, admitted he was one of two young players interesting bigger clubs, saying: “We have received interest from a number of parties regarding both Jarrad Branthwaite and Liam McCarron.”

McCarron only turned professional in September 2018 and whilst the Leeds first team might be a step too far, the likes of Jack Clarke have proven that Marcelo Bielsa believes in giving youth a chance.

Our View

Leeds would be the obvious choice out of those listed clubs. Derby tend to send their young talent out on loan and bring in youth prospects from the Premier League, whilst I’d be hard pushed to name you a player who has emerged successfully from Wolves or Sheffield United in the last two seasons.

Jack Clarke, Aapo Halme, Leif Davis, Bailey Peacock-Farrell, Tyler Roberts and Ryan Edmondson are just the ones that spring to mind immediately from Leeds. They focus on young players and have an impressive academy and McCarron would be wise to go there, if he does move.

  1. You are hard pushed to name a player that has emerged from Sheffield United????
Errr… did Harry Maguire, Kyle Walker, Kyle Naughton, Matt Lowton , Dominic Calvert Llewin and Aaron Ramsdale pass you by, or are you not really much of an observer of football
The guys you mention at Leeds are good prospects, particularly Clarke but the Sheffield United Acadamy has consistently produced players who have gone on to carve out excellent careers for themselves
Please check your facts in future guys, poor article
