Jon McLaughlin certainly made an impression at Sunderland this season, winning their Player of the Year award.
Not just that, but he’s won an army of fans at the Stadium of Light as well. The former Hearts and Burton stopper had a tremendous season, making wonderful saves as his side finished fifth.
For many, fifth is a failure. Getting into the play-offs is the same whether you’re third or sixth, but sadly they couldn’t make their top six finish a promotion catalyst, going down 2-1 at Wermbley to Charlton Atheltic.
It means another year in the third tier, only the second sepll they’ve had outside the top two divisions. That’s certainly seen as a failure and whislt Jack Ross might carry some of the blame, Jon McLaighlin does not.
The Black Cats have put a montage of his saves on Twitter this morning and, as expected, supporters have been quick to once again praise a man they credit with playing a key part in their season, successful or not.
They claim he might have saved them from a lower finish, some speculate he might want a move and there are others thinking he should be keeping goal for Scotland as a result of his standout season.
