Grimsby and Salford ‘keeping tabs’ on experienced striker

Grimsby Town and Salford City are ‘keeping tabs’ on Walsall striker Andy Cook as reported by the Express & Star.

The report claims they understand both clubs are interested in the experienced frontman but that Walsall are keen to hang on to last seasons leading scorer.

Cook scored eighteen times for the Saddlers in League One following his arrival from Tranmere Rovers in the summer where he scored fifty-one times in eighty-nine appearances.

Cook did enjoy two years at Grimsby while the Mariners were in the National League and the report suggests Michael Jolley would like to bring the experienced striker back to Blundell Park to provide the goals to lift his side out of the lower reaches of League Two.

Salford City were reportedly interested in Cook last summer, but the striker chose instead to test himself in League One with Walsall. Heavily backed financially and now at the same competitive level as the Saddlers, Salford may well have theĀ financial muscle to tempt Walsall to part with Cook, the report suggests.

The report also claims Tranmere are eying a return for Cook as a replacement for James Norwood if as expected the EFL League Two Player of the Season leaves Prenton Park in the summer.

Cook signed a two-year-deal with Walsall after leaving Tranmere, and the Express and Star report that despite the interest, the club is yet to receive any firm bids for their striker.

Our View

An excellent signing for either club but you get the feeling that new manager Darrell Clarke will be keen to keep Cook at Walsall for next season.

This might put cash-strapped Grimsby out of the picture and leave the door open for cash-rich Salford to make Walsall an offer they will struggle to refuse.

Cook is an experienced striker with a good track record, just the sort of player profile Salford appearĀ to prefer.
