Saido Berahino was sacked by Stoke City this week after his conviction for drink driving and Port Vale striker Tom Pope has been making sure he has his say on the issue.
25-year-old Berahino was banned from driving for 30 months and fined £75,000 for being three times over the legal alcohol limit when he was pulled over in London. He claimed to have been getting away from a gang of armed robbers.
That’s one of the points controversial Pope has picked up on in a series of tweets recently. Pope is a staunch Port Vale fan and never misses an opportunity to wind up their bitter rivals.
He claims that he’d score more for Stoke than Berahino even though he’d be ‘trying to miss’, before claiming he’d been trying to get away from the Loch Ness monster before he was caught drink driving.
In the sanitised age of modern football, where personality is often replaced by formulaic tweets and interviews, Pope is a breath of fresh air. He might not be everyone’s cup of tea and he certainly enjoys a wind-up, but at least he’s entertaining.
He certainly got the Stoke fans foaming at the mouth as he laid into £20m Berahino, but there’s surely a fair few neutrals, like us, who saw the funny side of the exchanges.
