Alan Parry’s comment that if you are a football supporter on Merseyside you are either ‘a red or a blue’ has been challenged on social media by Tranmere Rovers.
Parry made the remark at the beginning of his Sky Sports commentary of the League Two playoff semi-final first leg against Forest Green Rovers at Prenton Park on Friday evening
The club itself also seemed unhappy at the comment and further suggestion by Parry that Tranmere was just a second club for supporters of neighbouring Premier League giants, Liverpool and Everton.
A Tweet by the club implied that Parry had failed to thoroughly do his homework in his obviously pre-planned attempt to build the atmosphere before kick-off for his armchair viewers.
Rovers are a club with a proud history and highlighted that with an average attendance of 6552 for the current season, which includes over 3600 season ticket holders, and over 3000 season tickets already sold for next season, not all football fans on Merseyside support Liverpool or Everton
Being patronised by the national broadcast media is nothing new for the club’s outside the Premier League, and indeed the Championship but the Tweet by the club provoked some interesting reaction by supporters and not just those of the Super White Army.
It is fair to say, Sky’s coverage of football in the lower tiers of the EFL came in for some criticism and while Parry didn’t get away scot free, most of the fans directed their anger at the organisation itself.
It will be interesting to see if Sky acknowledges Parry’s insulting comment when they cover the second leg tonight.
