Sunderland, Barnsley and Fleetwood Town are set to do battle for the summer signature of highly rated Wimbledon defender Deji Oshilaja.
According to a report on HITC Sport, sources close to the club are suggesting the twenty-five-year-old looks set to leave Kingsmeadow on a free transfer when his current deal expires next month, sparking a battle for his services.
The report claims the centre-half was subject to bids during the January transfer window with Luton Town reportedly interested. The Dons managed to hang on to their star defender, with the former Cardiff City youth product subsequently helping in Wimbledon’s dramatic escape from League One relegation and successful FA cup run until a foot injury curtailed his season in February.
Oshilaja is now reportedly looking for a move away from South London, and his impressive displays have caught the eye of several clubs with his availability on a free transfer making him an attractive proposition.
He made thirty-two appearances for the Dons last season and has also previously spent time on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, Gillingham and Newport County while at Cardiff.
Our View
Oshilaja’s versatility alone would make him a quality signing for any of the clubs mentioned in dispatches, and if he continues to develop, he may well be good enough for a club like Barnsley in the Championship.
The Dons captain is highly rated at Kingsmeadow, but it appears Wally Downes will struggle to keep hold of him in the summer.
Some Dons supporters will no doubt comfort themselves in the knowledge that their great end of season run which achieved safety came when Oshilaja was out injured.
