The outstanding form of Colchester United’s Sammie Szmodics has alerted the interest of several Championship clubs.
According to a report in the Daily Mail, Bristol City, Derby County and Hull City are set to battle it out for the signature of the highly rated twenty-three-year-old in the summer.
Colchester-born Szmodics has been a crucial player in the U’s ultimately unsuccessful push for promotion and scored twice in his side’s 3-0 win at champions Lincoln City in their final game of the League Two season.
His eye-catching performances are no-secret to League Two fans, and with his contract due to expire next month, it paves the way for a departure from a club he has been at for sixteen years.
Szmodics ended the season with fifteen goals and six assists leaving Colchester no doubt bracing themselves for offers for their prize asset when the transfer window reopens with the player ready to test himself at a higher level after one-hundred-and sixty-two appearances for the U’s.
Szmodics showed in his performance on Saturday why the Championship will be his summer destination.
Admittedly Lincoln showed signs they were already on the beach, but he still bossed the game from a deep-lying forward position and showed real all-round quality in his performance.
It also looked like he was saying a fond farewell to the U’s supporters at the end of the game.
Some League Two players struggle to make the jump straight up to the second tier, but I think Szmodics will have a better chance than many at making the grade at a higher a level.
He is an outstanding and immensely talented player.
