Shrewsbury Town are set to exercise their option on midfielder Ryan Barnett after his recent loan spell at Telford.
The Shropshire Star report that the 19-year-old is set to have a one-year extension taken up by the club as his current deal nears expiry.
Barnett played 21 times in the National League North this season and caught the eye with a series of explosive appearances on the flank at New Buck’s Head.
Manager Sam Ricketts confirmed his intention to keep the player at the club next season, saying; “We have an option on his contract which we will be exercising.
“He’s certainly got the potential to be a star. The loan has been good for him, he’s been able to play regularly, earn the right to play.
“He’s produced man of the match performances and been unlucky not to play a couple of times. It’s been a good experience for him.”
Barnett has emerged from the youth set up at the New Meadow and was given his first senior call up by then manager Paul Hurst last season.
This season he’s made three appearances, two in the EFL Trophy and one in League One, although the bulk of his football has come during his loan spell.
Having watched the player’s progression this season, it seems he is on course to become a rising star at the New Meadow. He impressed in the National League North and the senior football will only serve to develop him further.
He might not be a regular next season, but the EFL Trophy will almost certainly be graced by his presence. It’s a great competiton for blooding young players, even if fans think it’s a chore.
