Luton Town looked destined for promotion and the League One title for much of the second half of the season, but the defeat at Burton Albion on Saturday prolonged a worrying dip in form that has seen their comfortable lead at the top of the table disappear.
The Hatters set a club record twenty-eight game unbeaten run in what seemed like an irresistible march to Championship status, but the Burton result leaves them with only one win in five. They remain top of the table on goal difference alone, with Barnsley equal on points and Portsmouth four points adrift in third with a game in hand.
The Hatters now need to beat in-form Oxford United at Kenilworth Road on the final day of the season to finally secure what seemed a formality a few weeks ago.
Even with a final-day draw or a loss, Mick Harford’s men could still go up automatically, but it all depends on how Portsmouth get on. Mick Harford’s men could even go up without kicking a ball on Tuesday if Portsmouth lose their game in hand at home to playoff-chasing Peterborough United.
The Hatters still very much have their destiny in their own hands, but supporters are starting to get nervous about their fate after they watched their side throw away a half-time lead at the Pirelli Stadium.
Here is a selection of their reactions to the weekend’s events on Twitter.
I dont think my heart can take anymore all that hard work all season ….please get that win against oxford …deserve nothing less than promotion 🙏😭🧡🎩😩

It’s safe to say we can all agree that @Mickharford the boys and the rest of the team at @LutonTown have gone above and beyond everyone’s expectations to get us back where we belong ten years later. Get behind them next week and we can do it 🔸🔹👒#coyh #ltfc #hatters

Seeing a lot of Luton fans saying they’re more than happy with just getting promoted! Screw that we want to win it with the position we’re in, at this point I’ll be gutted if we don’t as I was last year #LTFC
