Doncaster Rovers prolific striker John Marquis has dropped a huge hint that he could lave the Keepmoat Stadium this summer, as reported by the Chronicle Live.
Marquis is likely to be on the shopping list of a number of clubs this summer after another impressive campaign with Rovers. He’s helped fire them into the play-off picture, after many predicted a long season of struggle.
The 26-year-old has bagged 63 goals in 138 outings for Grant McCann’s side after a rather nomadic start to his career. He had eight loan spells away from parent club Millwall, for whom he scored six goals in 67 outings.
He’s now opened the door for clubs who might covet his signature, with the end of his contract approaching in 2020.
“My contract will be going into my last year and the club’s approach may be different,” he said. “Depending on what league we’re in could also make a difference.”
“I’ve always said I want to play as high as possible, I want to challenge myself and I want to improve. I’m doing that at the minute at Doncaster. In the summer it may be a different story.”
Rovers are currently sixth in the League One table, but have two games in hand of Peterborough below them and Charlton above them, with three points the gap between them and the Addicks who they play in a couple of weeks.
Our View
It would be a disaster for Donny to lose Marquis. He’s a great centre forward and has scored goals regularly for them during his stay at the Keepmoat.
However, at 26 he has to test himself as high as possible and if the interest is there, it benefits the club to sell him whilst his stock is high.
He could walk away for free next summer and that wouldn’t benefit anyone at all, other than his agent.
