Morecambe have boosted their offering up front by adding Carlisle forward Richie Bennett to their squad on loan until the end of the season.
The powerful forward has found his chances limited at Brunton Park and has even played in the centre of defence this season. He’s previously been with Barrow, where he impressed with 22 goals in 53 games.
That earned him his Football league move, but he’s scored 12 times in 58 appearances for the Cumbrians, sparking the Morecambe switch.
“Richie is a player we have liked for a few years,” Morecambe boss Jim Bentley told the Morecambe Visitor.
“We watched him at Northwich a few years ago and followed his progress from Barrow to Carlisle. He did really well at Barrow and whenever he has played against us for Carlisle has been a threat.”
“He’s a good size, works hard and is good in the air. He ticks a lot of boxes for us and we look forward to working with him.”
The 6ft 4in hitman started out at Ashton and has also played for Northwich Victoria.
This could be a good signing for Morecambe. Bennett is a big, robust unit with a decent eye for goal.
He was excellent for Barrow during the 2016/17 season but struggled to impress boss John Sheridan before he left the club last month. If he settles quickly his presence could be an important factor in keeping Morecambe in the Football League again.
