Newport County received a massive boost ahead of their Third Round FA Cup tie with Premier League Leicester City with the news that striker Padraig Amond has signed a new deal with the club, extending his stay at Rodney Parade until the end of the 2019/2020 season.
Popular Irishman Amond has scored 29 goals in 83 appearances for the exiles since moving from Hartlepool in 2017.
County boss Michael O’Flynn was delighted with the news, “It is great for the football club that Podge has extended his deal. Not only is he one of the best strikers in the League, but he is also a top professional, and I am so glad he is one of ours for another season”.
30-year-old Amond started his career in Ireland with Shamrock Rovers, helping them to promotion in 2006. He switched to Sligo Rovers before a spell in Portugal led to a move to Accrington Stanley. After a couple of seasons with Morecambe, it was at Grimsby Town that Amond enjoyed his most prolific season, scoring 30 league goals as they secured promotion from the National League. A further 15 league goals the following season for Hartlepool led to his arrival in South Wales, where he has become a firm fans favourite.
Our View
Fantastic news for Exile supporters to secure the services of one of the best strikers in the division for a further season and a half. Newport’s form has been a little patchy of late after a good start. With Amond’s future now settled, they will be hoping his goals power them to a playoff position at the end of the season.
